SUNRISE COAST

After a short trip on the ferry from Mulifanua – You will arrive at the Saleologa Wharf, also known as the Gateway to Savaii! The hustle and bustle of the wharf area will greet you with many smiling faces. The wharf area may seem chaotic but the commotion is short lived, only to coincide with arrival and departure of the ferry- otherwise this slightly dusty terminal is usually quiet! Although Salelologa serves as the main business area for the island, it is nothing like Apia. The pace of life is wound down here and after 4pm a stroll through the town area is quiet and soul soothing! You will quickly feel like you are truly on holiday!

Remember to get your cash out of either of the 2 ATM machines by the ANZ or Westpac banks. Since July 2011 is a second ATM from ANZ at Manase available. Salelologa provides the optimal place for you to grab your handicrafts souvenirs with its many scattered shops, most of which serve as mini-supermarkets

Carving

A must see is the recently completed Salelologa market place. Here you will find the main bus depot for the island, as well as the center of Fruit and vegetable vendors.

Salelologa Market

Salelologa will provide you with a few more choices of places to eat and mingle with the locals but don't expect anything like the bright lights of a city! You wont have to venture 'out of town' to see the smoke of an earth oven “umu” fogging the roads in the early hours of the morn, nor should you expect to find anything much open on a Sunday- the Sabbath is a highly respected day of rest in Samoa.

Umu

The sunrise coast offers travelers an excellent base from which to explore the island. If you have rented a car, then you might want the benefit of being close to your everyday shops and amenities, the wharf and airport, while enjoying the variety of places to dine. At the same time, explore Savaii with its very easy navigation, either go left or go right at the traffic lights to circle the entire island !
